Is Italy not pink enough?Pink pink, pink - in one of the first speeches the newly elected Italian President Silvio Berlusconi gave, he announced that he thinks the new Spanish government had too many ladies. This shows again, that on the one side he is a known womanizer, while on the other side is stays an old patriarch.
A new conservative trend?
One might get the feeling, that a new trend has found its way into Europe - and maybe into the world. It seems that Conservatives are increasingly becoming more popular because somehow they are able to capture lifestyle, trends and perceptions better than Social Democrats and left-wing parties do. This is true for Italy and it seems to be true for Cameron in UK, the nationalist Party in Scotland, and also in Hungary - other countries could be added to that list.
Big questions remains: why are social democrats less capable of finding personalities which are willing or able to embrace different streams and trends at the same time while concurrently sticking to an individualistic and open-minded approach?
After the victory of Silvio Berlusconi Italy still has the same problem as ever: its financial situation is a disaster (a so called excessive deficit procedure is currently in progress). It is unimaginable that this situation will get better during Berlusconi's third term. His main problem: he will have to please everyone to stay in power, wants to be everybody's darling.
Have a look at Berlusconi's comments as discussed on the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
