Seit Dezember 2007 verhandelt die EU mit den verschiedenen Ländern der Afrika-, Karibik- und Pazifikregion (AKP) über Wirtschaftspartnerschaftsabkommen (Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs)). Diese Handelsabkommen wurden notwendig, weil das "Cotonou Agreement" aus dem Jahr 2000, das die Handelsbeziehungen bisher regelte, im Dezember 2007 ausgelaufen ist. Die Wirtschaftspartnerschaftsabkommen sollen die wichtigen Handelsbeziehungen zwischen der EU und den AKP-Ländern nun weiterführen. Die Abkommen schaffen Freihandelszonen zwischen der EU und den in bestimmten Gruppen zusammengefassten Ländern, die mit den WTO-Richtlinien (insbesondere mit Art. XXIV des GATT) kompatibel sind.
