With the summit on international financial markets
regulation scheduled for Washington on 15
November, EU leaders met in Brussels
on 7 November 2008 to develop ideas to bring to the summit.
As presidents of the EU/Mexico Joint
Parliamentary Committee, Erika Mann and Senador José Guadarrama Márquez wrote a
letter to Nicolas Sarkozy, as President of the
French Presidency of the Council of the European Union and to the American
President. The letter was drafted on the occasion of the VII.EU/Mexico Joint
Parliamentary Committee Meeting in Mexico on 29 October 2008.
This letter concerns the wish to include Mexico into the future international architecture of the G20 group.
Mexico already took part in the G8 summit in 2007 in Heiligendamm and is again invited to take part in the “Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy” of the G20 on 15 November 2008 in Washington.
With this letter, Erika Mann and Senador José Guadarrama Márquez want to support the idea of a long-term involvement of Mexico into the G20 as an official state participant represented through the head of state. Mexico is in many ways a key country and a very reliable partner especially in international law environments (which was shown in the case of the Iraq war or the discussions about climate change).
